Asbestos, which is the main cause of mesothelioma, was discovered in the 20th century. There were many articles written in the 1930s that indicated that asbestos is linked to cancer. The first to be proposed in writing that asbestos is the major cause of lung cancer. That publication was called "Pulmonary Asbestosis."

During 1955 a connection was established between the development of certain forms of lung cancer and the ingestion of asbestos fibers, which confirmed this theory.
